Hugo Junkers in Germany 1917 developed this revolutionary design with a cantilever wing cellule, all metal steel tube and aluminum profile airframe construction and covered with corrugated dural (aluminum alloy).

The first single seater fighter was allocated to the German airforce in 1918 and the two-seater ground attack version a little later this year. They arrived to late to have any influence on the outcome of the war. A total of 44 units were built of the two versions.

The design concept laid the foundation to one of the most successful early passenger airline aircraft, the type Junkers F13. Many more types were to follow, with the trimotor Ju52 “Tante Ju” being the ultimate development.
