With the event of the syncronized machine gun this nimble little fighter became the deadliest of weapons in the early air war. Often referred to as the “Fokker scourge” this aircrraft was the mount of famouus fighter aces like Immelman, Boelke and others.
The design was influenced by the sucessful aircraft developed pre war by Morane Saulnier but the upper hand was achieved with the Spandau machinegun that could shoot through the propeller arc.
The lateral control was achieved by wing warping and the all flying elevator plus rudder on a long moment arm gave the airplane competitive handling qualities.
The fuselage was made of welded steel tubes, an assembly method developed together with his engineer Reynold Platz. The engine was a rotary 9 cylinder 100 hp Oberursel, in principle a le Rhone development. |
