The Vickers Vimy, conceived in 1917, arrived to late to play any active role in the war. It could take a bomb load of 2476 lbs. and had a range of 9 hours. It could be equipped with up to four machine guns for self defense.
The aircraft had two Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII V-12 engines, each of 269 kW (360 hp) that gave a crusing speed of 103 mph. Operating ceiling was 10,500 feet with an all up weight of 7000 lbs.
With its wingspan, it was the largest biplane built in England. It was built by Vickers Ltd. It broke long distance records in 1919 and it was the first plane to cross the North Atlantic this year. The epic flight was made in June 1919 from Newfoundland to Ireland.
Several other long distance flights were to follow, the first flight from England to Australia in 1919. The first flight from London, England, to Cape Town, South Africa, in 1920.
Our model can be delivered as the Atlantic record flight model or as “Silver Queen”, the 1990 replica that has carried out duplication of some of the flights. |
