The aircraft had a top speed of 82 mph. (132 km/h), could climb to 10,000 feet in 19 minutes and could stay aloft for three hours. Early in the war the 504 strafed the enemy and took part in one of the earliest bombing raids in the war – the attack on the Zeppelin airship works at Friedrichshafen – and were also used in Britain for anti-Zeppelin patrols. The Avro 504 was a robust and safe design that was relatively easy to fly and, as it became outclassed in performance for combat, it was adopted for pilot instruction.

Following A V Roe’s experiments with a triplane formula, he continued his policy of using wings with high aspect ratio, but in biplane form. The result emerged as the Avro 504, which from its 1913 debut had an unusually long and successful career, at least four specimens surviving for impressment into military Service at the start of World War II.

AVRO H 5199 Built in 1918 as a K, converted in service to a 504N and later civilianized as G-ADEV Winner of the Devon Air Race in 1937 at 103mph. Impressed into military service in 1940 as BK892 for glider towing experiments. Subsequently re-converted to original K standard by Avro apprentices for the Collection. Suffered an engine failure in June 1989 when it landed among beetroot Lack of spares delayed repair; flew again in July 1990, but still there were technical problems. More recently a different (but still original) engine has been fitted; adjustments and magneto changes have made the engine handling satisfactory.
