Eduard Nieuport designed this aircraft, which became the first aircraft in the Swedish military aircorps. It was intended for reconnaissance, but the observer being placed behind the pilot had his downward view obstructed by the large wings. It was designated M1, the first monoplane and it was last flown at the Swedish Airforce 50th anniversary in 1976.
The fuselage has forward a welded steel box frame containing the engine, wing attachment and the landing gear. The rest of the fuselage is a wire braced girder wood box frame. Lateral control was by wingwarping and the mode of this was by the pilot standing on the actuator bar in the cockpit. At the anniversary the pilot was flying in this manner which by todays standard is considered very tiring and inadeqate.
One aircraft is preserved in the Swedish Airforce Museum in Linköping, Sweden. A similar airgraft, the 2N, is preserved in the Musée de l’air et Espace at le Bourget, the old commercial airport north of Paris, France. |
