When Kurt Tank joined Focke Wulf Flugzeugbau
in Germany his first design, the FW44 Stieglitz
(Goldfinch) became a very popular design world wide.
Sweden at that time was in need of an advanced
trainer and the FW44 fit the requirements.. A batch
of 26 airplanes were purchased from the Focke Wulf
Flugzeugbau in Germany but the majority of the
demand was met with licenced production in Sweden
by ASJA/SAAB and CVV, the Military Aircraft
Production Factory.
A total of 85 units were aquired and were in
service from 1936 until 1967 and several are flying
under civilian registration still today.
