Robert Blackburn was one of the British pioneers in designing and building airplanes. His first machine to fly successfully, was from the sands in Filey in 1910. Several developments followed in the next years and the designs were aerodynamically cleaned up. In February 1913, Robert Blackburn delivered one aeroplane, that he had built for Cyril Foggin.
This same aircraft is now preserved in flying condition by the Shuttleworth Collection in, Old Warden Aerodrome, Biggleswade in England. Every summer, weather permitting, this original bird takes to the air and performs flawlessly.
Richard Shuttleworth, the founder of this magnificent collection of old aircraft, found this specimen in a haystack in 1937 and aquired it for his collection of aircrafts. The restoration was not finished until 1949 and in 1985 the aircraft was entirely re-covered and some previous mistakes were corrected. This is the oldest original British aircraft still flying anywhere in the world.
The fuselage was constructed using Ash and Pine and the aircraft was covered with cotton fabric coated with shrinking dope and varnish. |
