Produced early in 1915, the Albatros C I was a development of the highly successful pre-war two-seater designed by Ernst Heinkel before he left the Albatros Werke to go to Hansa-Brandenburg. For its day it was a powerful aeroplane and this fact, allied to its well proportioned rugged construction, admirably suited it for its General Duties classification in which it was used for fighting, escort, bombing, reconnaissance, artillery observation and photography—and sometimes a combination of two or more of these chores at once! It continued in operational use on all fronts until well into 1916, although by the end of 1915 it had begun to be replaced by its successor, the C III.
It was the installation of the excellent 150 h.p. Benz D III, or 160 h.p. Mercedes D III engine that gave the C I the edge on its contemporary Allied types which did not enjoy engines of comparable power/weight ratio. Empty the aircraft weighed 1,925 lb. and carried a useful load of some 639 lb. Performance figures with the 160 h.p. Mercedes were as follows: maximum speed, 82+ m.p.h. and climb, 3,280 ft. in 90 mins., 6,560 ft. in 25 mins., 9,840 ft. in 58+ mins. with a ceiling of approximately 10,000 ft. Tankage of 150 litres gave an endurance of about two hours.
Armament consisted of a free moving Parabellum machine gun, on a rotating ring mount in the rear cockpit. Storage space for a small bomb load was provided in cylindrical containers fixed on the C/G between the two cockpits. No forward firing armament was provided at this juncture, as no synchronising gear had yet been devised. |
