K & W Model Airplanes Incorporated

Was founded 1997 as a development of  the activities, started two years earlier as a personal enterprise; manufacturing vintage flying scale models. Behind it lies the long experience of Göran Kalderén as a scale modeler with accomplishments on World Scale Championship level. In 1976 his model of the Swedish trainer Ö-1, Tummelisa gained 3rd in static scoring. The "W" in the company name stands for Thomas P. Welch, a long term modeler with lots of experience and a critical advisor and also test pilot for our planes.
The combination of experience in scale modeling,  available personal time and the relatively low labor  costs in the Philippines was a fertile soil for a scale production of finished vintage flying scale models.
The members of the work force are dedicated Filipinos who are trained under the supervision of Göran Kalderén and the final product control is an personal task of the designer.
With the founders’ aviation interest in the time prior to WW2, it is natural that the concept of the production program would center on airplanes from the period 1903 - 1933, and as it is stated in a brochure: "All airplanes are large 1/5th scale models of the full size counterpart. Some original aircraft are still flying today, some original aircraft are residing in museums and some have vanished from the surface of this earth, only to be revived as models in our manufacturing program".
Each model is designed and constructed by Göran Kalderén and each prototype is flight tested on the local flying field (or water area when applicable).
Top of the line are museum quality display models which each consume more than 500 hours additional working time per piece. On these models no effort is spared to duplicate in 1/5th scale every visible detail.   The general production are stand-off scale models, where details not visible at 10 feet (3 meters) distance are not included. The models are however exact in shape and measurements and finished in a accurate replica pattern. In addition to the standard finishing a choice of additional liveries are available plus the customers own individual choice finished  to order.
The basic material for our model airplanes is Balsa wood. This fast growing tree is available from plantations in Iligan in Mindanao. A view from the plantation reveals the dense foilage and the the height of 5 year old trees, ready for harvesting. The logs are brought to our plant and are cut in half and debarked. Stored and kiln dried for 3 - 4 months after which it can be sliced to appropriate sheet thickness. After another 2 months it can be processed in the planer and belt sander and cut to the right dimensions for sheets and strip wood.
Our production is housed in localities especially designed and erected for the purpose. You may not be familiar with the types of buildings, but it is all designed to comply with and adopt to the tropical environment that we work in.
At the present 35 skilled workers are employed to produce our models. All people are trained within the company, as no experience in this particular field is available in this country. As you can see from the pictures, our models are big, built to 1/5th scale of the original aircrafts. This gives a wingspan ranging from 63 inches / 160 cm to 160 inches / 400 cm. Each model is completely assembled and rigged functionally with operating ailerons, rudder and elevator. Some of the early designs have instead of aileron, so called wing warping, another challenge to build and operate. At the present there is no other company in the world that is building finished models from the early years of aviation.
Most of the raw material is locally produced, like the balsa wood that we receive as logs from a nearby plantation. Other materials are sheet metals and spring steel wires. Some of the more exclusive parts are imported from USA and Europe, like the covering material Solartex from England, the rigging wire from U.S.A. and the clevices from Germany.
In our staff we have experienced engineers, good model builders and certainly first class workers. All our metal parts are produced and assembled by experienced craftsmen. Take for example a machine gun, a composite work from the metal shop and final finishing in the wood assembly shop. Only to be finished in the paint shop. A minor item in the total of an airplane but very essential.
When the individual completely rigged and assembled model has been inspected it is disassembled, packed in sturdy cartons, labelled and sealed with the serial number of the model. Carefully wrapped in protective bubble plastic the model airplanes are once again checked for the contents in the cartons and then stored in our warehouse until it is time to load the shipment in a container for transport to the final customer abroad.  We want to make sure that you receive the model in the same condition that we ship it in. 98% of the production is for export and we have customers all over the world. USA and Europe are the largest markets.
Tom Welch and Göran Kalderén are actively promoting the products world wide. Here seen at Weak Signals R/C show in Toledo, Ohio U.S.A last April 2000. Grace and Göran also in Manila F.A.M.E show in October 2000.
When in Cebu Philippines, please visit our factory and show room to convince yourself of the variety and quality of our products.
